Pointers for your trip to Phuket!!
1. PICK UP FREE SIM FROM AIRPORT, near baggage claim. Take the minivan that goes to patong beach from the airport itself. All taxi bookings to/from airport can be done from your hotel. But don't be late because these taxis are actually mini-vans that pick up people from different hotels of patong beach and take them to airport together. and since the journey can take one hour, make sure you take a cab timing which is sufficiently early!
2. There are a number of day-trips organized by these travel people. be sure to do these two:
a) The maya bay + phi phi island trip. it has snorkeling also. we went in a group and were carrying a beach ball so had fun splashing in the water as well :) of course we were horrible at catching. pickup time is 8.30 am so remember that you have to book the previous evening!
b) The james bond + phang nga (pronunciation PANG NA) bay trip. okay the travel time for this is a lot. but its beautiful and there is kayaking through limestone structures. you get to see the island that featured in some james bond movie. and anyway u have each other so m sure you wont get bored on the long drive ;)
3. TO EAT: On the land-- at Patong Beach there is an infamous road called Bangla road.. there is a good pizza place called PIZZA COMPANY here from where we had most of our meals..veg pizzas also available. besides this, there are mcdonalds and subways. so not a problem
4. TO SEE: on bangla road, of course there is a lot to see. but 2 things you must see together are rock city cafe, where you should have the flaming shots, moulin rouge, which has european pole dances (it is in one of the side galis out of bangla road so you'll have to look for it). these two are classy places. baaki its fun to go into one of the discs to just dance :)
5. PHUKET PHANTASEA: there are two famous shows. one is simon cabaret. which is basically transvestites putting on singing dancing performances. NOT WORTH IT. cos u can see them anyway at bangla road so the fun is lost. the other is phuket phantasea. If you go, dont take the option with free dinner buffet. it is not worth it apparently.
Other famous places : Krabi, and some river rafting thing at tone pariwat sanctuary. Didn't do all that, but am sure it will be good.
PRICES: each of these day trips should cost around 1100-1200 indonesian baht per head. 1200 baht is 51 sgd. the prices will start at 2800. u have to bargain!! just do it!
the non-bargainable thing will be phuket phantasea. but dekh aana yaar :)
SHOPPING: I didnt do much shopping. I'd recommend you save your shopping list for Bangkok; otherwise there are opportunities to shop in the tiny markets on the way to the beach.
DO NOT DO THE JETSKI on patong beach. There is a related horror story which I will share with those who ask ;)
and carry a print-out of this with you :)
